September 1916 was a wild time in Berlin, Ontario. Think: vandalism, unruly, soldiers, rioting, and two divisive votes over the cities’s name. Find out why a minister was bloodied a beloved landmark burned, and how Germany’s Kaiser made a ‘splash’ in the park lake!

The controversial referendum and vote that changed the city’s name was preceded by a year of tumultuous event as this predominantly German city came to grips with the liability of its name and growing anti-German sentiments during World War I.

Take a walk through Victoria Park (Willow River Park) and downtown Kitchener to explore a controversy over names and a park statue. Though this may sound like current events, this walk will travel over 100 years ago in local history to Berlin/Kitchener during World War I.

This is one of TWO walks happening on Saturday, September 27. You could also join the Historic GALT tour in downtown Cambridge to learn about its early settlement and industrial history.

This group of friends got together for a private tour with Black Cambridge: Footsteps to Freedom on a sunny September.

Several of them are retired educators, and talked about how important this kind of learning could be for high school teachers as professional development.
